Last Tuesday, September 15, third grade students did an activity for science about bee pollination. Students have been studying plants, animals, their adaptations, their effect on the environment, and their life cycles. Students learned the importance of pollination of flowers and learned the overall outcome of the process. Basically, they learned that pollination is a necessity.
Students all had flower patterns with vanilla frosted cupcakes. Other flowers had pollen in them (kool-aid powder, sprinkles) in them. Students made bees from pipe cleaners.
Students used their bees to go from one flower to another, getting pollen on their fuzzy feet and landing on their own flower(the cupcake). This gave students a great visual of how bees drink nectar and get pollen on them. This is how they transfer pollen to reproduce in order to get new flowers and even fruit. Students completed a worksheet while doing the project. Mrs. Walker and Mr. Harris are thankful for donations that were turned in to help students do this project.
